The Environment and Us

Caring for the natural environment and landscape is important to us at Croft Cottage. We are working towards the creation of a greener holiday cottage service. We aim to share our appreciation of, and our concern for, the environment with our guests so that the place may be enjoyed by visitors for many years to come.

In Spring 2002, we planted seven hectares of mixed native deciduous trees and a nurse crop of Alaskan Pine. The Alaskan Pine will be removed once shelter has been established and the native varieties are thriving. Over the past two years further planting of broadleaved trees has taken place on the croft and native species are starting to spread inland from their refuge on the cliffs where they survived the ravages of sheep. It is our intention to create more paths throughout the croft to enable visitors easier access to some of the sites of interest.

We use local suppliers for groceries and goods as much as possible and we encourage our guests to do so too.

We recycle as much waste as possible. Separate bins are provided for Glass, Metal, Plastic and Organic waste. A smaller compost caddy is provided in the cottage. This is used in the garden compost heap.

We use environmentally friendly products such as Ecover for cleaning.

Our septic tank is SEPA approved and outflow is well within regulation requirements.

All electrical appliances were bought with the highest energy efficiency ratings to minimise energy consumption. We have dimmer switches on the majority of lights in the cottage. We have a high level of insulation throughout the cottage.

We welcome your suggestions as to how we may improve upon our environmental practices.
